Bielefeld University is closely connected with civil society, business and politics. A variety of formats promote stimulating exchange between science and the public.
Findings from basic research are carried over into society: through cooperation with business enterprises, non-profit organizations as well as through policy advice, but also through spin-offs. This also applies to the surrounding urban community of Bielefeld and the OWL region, with which Bielefeld maintains close ties and provides impetus for issues of local and regional relevance. Thus, an important contribution is made to the development of a progressive and participative knowledge society.
Recognised researchers and companies from the region are working on the challenges of the future under the umbrella of Campus Bielefeld Research + Innovation and BRIC GmbH, which was founded in 2019.
In a listed building in the middle of Bielefeld's city centre, the Wissenswerkstadt offers free exhibitions and exciting hands-on activities for young and old as well as educational programmes for pupils and other educational institutions.
The teutolabs at Bielefeld University offer young researchers the opportunity to experience research up close. The diverse hands-on and experimental labs promote the understanding and interest of school pupils in the STEM subjects.
