Campus in Balance (CiB) - Your studies, your health

Campus of Bielefeld University
Bielefeld University

Mental health

Studying poses new challenges every day. It's not always easy to take care of your health between the lecture hall, seminar work, learning stress, part-time job, hobbies and private life. That's why the BARMER Campus Coach supports students in staying healthy and relaxed during their studies.

We offer professional help, counselling and support. Our facilities, advice centres and services in Bielefeld are competent and reliable partners for all people, regardless of origin, age or religious denomination.

Sitting still for hours on end is unhealthy - it has a negative effect on our bodies and can cause tension in the back, neck and shoulders, for example. It also affects our mental state, for example it can make us tired and make it difficult to concentrate.

In the summer semester 2024, we are therefore making our new "The healthy seminar room" boxes available for the first time - these are two small cabinets (easy to transport in the university building thanks to castors and pull handles) that are filled to the brim with various utensils to support long sitting sessions. The boxes can be borrowed for use in work and study and can be used, for example, by teaching staff in block seminars or by consultants in further training courses - if you are interested, simply contact: campusinbalance@uni-bielefeld.de

University Sports Service Bielefeld offers a wide range of activities in over 100 sports, which are used by several thousand students, employees and members of Bielefeld University and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (HSBI). Our aim is to promote the campus and social interaction. University Sports Service Bielefeld makes a significant contribution to this and has a lasting positive effect on the educational, research and working culture of the universities. In addition, the University Sports Service Bielefeld offers space for student engagement and thus opens up a wide range of opportunities for personal development for students.

Support and orientation for students with mental illness or stress

For students with mental health problems, everyday university life is often associated with more challenges that put more strain on their own strength. In addition, many of them experience themselves as "lone fighters" and lonely. For this reason, a group was set up in which the participants can exchange ideas, benefit from each other's experiences, support each other and develop strategies together on how their own suffering can perhaps be borne a little more easily and everyday university life can become a little less stressful.

People from Bielefeld who suffer from acute mental illnesses can find competent support at our clinic. Our clinic covers the entire field of psychiatry and psychotherapy. With specialised departments and biological, psychotherapeutic and socio-psychiatric treatment approaches, we provide our patients with tailor-made treatment options. With our inpatient, day-care and outpatient services, our clinic can be found at various locations in the city and patients can even visit us in their own homes.

In some acute stress situations, the waiting time for an email, a call back or the next consultation hour can seem far too long. If you need immediate support, help or just a sympathetic ear, you can find contact details for various crisis services in Bielefeld here.

We at LiLiGoesMental are a university group founded by students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies at Bielefeld University. We focus on destigmatisation and awareness-raising in the field of mental health.

LiLiGoesMental is actively committed to this purpose on three levels: by participating in committees and working groups, by organising exchange platforms and by sharing information, personal reports and contact points on the website and in social media.
Important aspects of our work are to show that those affected are not alone with their problems and difficulties and to encourage an exchange within the university.

Counselling and support services for mental stress or illness

All ZSB services are open to students with and without a "diagnosis", for stress and family problems as well as, for example, a manifest anxiety disorder or depression. That's why you've come to the right place at the ZSB.

The Psychological Counselling Service (PBD ) is located in Bielefeld city centre and offers support with psychosocial problems for adults, couples and families from all over the city.

On our website you will find information about the tasks and goals of the psychotherapy outpatient clinic, about individual research and treatment specialisations, the process and content of psychotherapy and ways to contact us.

Stress is completely normal in life. However, if tension and excessive demands become permanent, you need a counterbalance. We have many offers for you that can help you relax.

Everyday life as a student can sometimes become an enormous burden. Whether it's presentations or seminar papers that need to be completed, exams that need to be taken as successfully as possible or all the other things that need to be organised on the side. Stress is experienced individually - stress is a reaction to external influences, so-called stressors, which can cause various physical and psychological symptoms.

To prevent stress from causing damage to health, a stress phase must always be followed by a recovery phase. However, if stress becomes a permanent burden, it can limit your performance and have a negative impact on your health. The following links with offers for stress prevention, stress management, relaxation, compensation through exercise and sport as well as a (chargeable) massage offer can be helpful in balancing out the stress.

Since 1986, Bielefeld University's Addiction Prevention Working Group has been dealing with addiction and its consequences for those affected and for the university as a whole.

Here you will find support and assistance if you are

  • are affected by addiction yourself
  • are a colleague of a person affected by addiction
  • are a relative of a person affected by addiction

There are things in life where you simply need support. That can happen to anyone. But that doesn't mean you should be ashamed or afraid to seek counselling. Even if you need someone to listen to you because you are simply feeling unwell or alone.

The Confidence Team of the School of Public Health is a cross-status working group. We are your first point of contact if you have experienced or witnessed discrimination at the Faculty and would like support. If necessary, we will be happy to refer you to specialised contact points within our broad counselling network inside and outside the university.
