Young Refugees Treatment: The efficacy of KidNET as a treatment for traumatized refugee minors - A randomized controlled psychotherapy study

In our research project YOURTREAT, we are conducting a treatment study targeting refugee and asylum-seeking children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 inclusive .

Aim of the study

The aim of YOURTREAT is to investigate to what extent a treatment with KidNET (= narrative exposure therapy for children), a special form of trauma therapy, contributes to the reduction of psychological symptomatology in general and specifically the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbidities. To explore this question, treatment with KidNET will be compared with the usual treatment for children and adolescents in the German health care system. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups.

Multicenter Study

A total of four study centers specializing in the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers are involved in the implementation of the therapies: The Outpatient Center of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, the Psychotherapeutic University Outpatient Clinic of the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, the Psychotherapeutic University Outpatient Clinic of the University of Constance and the Psychotherapy Outpatient Clinic of the University of Bielefeld.

Intercultural therapy assistants

Intercultural therapy assistants (ITAs) also make a major contribution to the YOURTREAT project. They are selected for their special linguistic and interpersonal skills and trained as language and cultural mediators within the project. ITAs support outreach work (e.g. at schools) as well as the diagnostic and therapeutic process. Due to their deployment, mastery of the German language is not mandatory for participation in YOURTREAT.
