In 2019, the building was opened as the Innovation Centre Campus Bielefeld (ICB). In December 2020, the university bought the ICB. Since then, it has been called "R1" and is used by the Faculty of Medicine OWL. Approximately half of the 7,150 square metres of usable space is used for laboratories and half for offices. In spatial terms, R1 represents the starting point of the new Faculty of Medicine, which has been under construction since 2018. The first employees have moved into their offices and set up laboratories here. Even before the purchase, the university was the main tenant of the space.
The new building was constructed from 2016 to 2019 on the corner of Morgenbreede and Voltmannstraße. The building consists of four parts with a central reception area and an underground car park, distributed over four floors.
Originally, the building was planned as an innovation centre for start-ups and already established small and medium-sized enterprises from the technology fields of intelligent technical systems and molecular and nanosciences. With the purchase, the university takes over the contracts of seven tenants.
